3.5 StarsThe rating isn't because I didn't enjoy the premise or the characters because I found both to have drawn me in. With many scenes raw and full of emotion as we come to understand Des and Hefin and what makes them tick. Their attraction and what they feel for each other was palpable.
What I did struggle with was the fact that at times the storytelling became a bit too flowery and I felt the scenes drifted and became too disjointed. That at times the thread was lost to over descriptive prose.
I did find that around the half way point the storyline was more straight forward and flowed better.

I loved this story. It touched something personal inside me. I was glad she pursued her dreams and followed her heart where ever it led her in the future.
After reading Mary Ann Rivers' two published novellas, I was waiting impatiently to read her first novel. She did not disappoint as she introduced us to the Burnside family. Well written story, great characters who I could easily know, this book makes me look forward to the other three in the series. Keep them coming!
Good story line but a little slow to get through. I tend to like a little more dialog between characters.
I have read a stupid amount of romances in my life. Hundreds, I'm sure. They're easy little escapes, erotic interludes, brain vacations. This book was different though. This one really stopped me in my tracks. I have never written a review for the aforementioned hundreds of romances, but this one was so good, so well done, thoughtful, and realistic, that I just had to say something.
I consider myself to be a snobby romance reader. I've spent too much money on books that I never finish, because they're poorly written, or unrealistic, or just plain stupid. I have a bachelors in English from a Fancy University, so I at least moderately know my shit. If you're hesitating about buying this book, please don't. It's well written, engaging, hot, and above all things it is realistic. Mary Ann Rivers is an automatic must buy for me, and it probably should be for you too.
p.s. there are so many romance reviews where people say things like, "it made me laugh and cry!" and I always roll my eyes and try and figure out what in the world could have resonated so fully with that reader to engage their tear ducts and/or cheek muscles. But, guys, I did laugh, and I did actually cry. Really! Rivers really has a way with words, and something about her descriptions of the loss of childhood really got to me. Anyways, I laughed, I cried, blah blah, now buy this book!
I just finished reading Live by Mary Ann Rivers. I couldn't put it down! I fell in love with the two main characters and also all of the secondary characters. The author has an incredible way of building a story...every one of the characters seemed so real and fully developed. I cried, I laughed out loud, and I fully loved this book! I'm really looking forward to the next book in the series, Laugh.
Love, love, love MAR's writing. Didn't like the heroine in this one. LOVED the hero. Wanted a book about his romance with his first wife, now that would have been FASCINATING.
I enjoyed the philosophical introspection of the characters and that their introspection and realizations flowed as they grew/progressed - versus reading a repetition of the same realizations in different words.
